How to Choose the Right Custom Metal Signs for Your Office

Metal has a way of making a statement without trying too hard. A set of brushed steel letters on a reception wall tells visitors you take your business seriously, and it does it quietly. It’s no surprise that custom metal signs are among the most requested products we make. For most clients, the hard part isn’t deciding on metal. It’s deciding which metal, which finish and which style will suit their space.

Here’s how we’d approach it.

Start with your brand, not the material

Before looking at finishes, look at your logo and brand colours. A law firm with a navy and gold identity might suit gold stainless steel or bronze. A creative agency with a bold, modern look could go for painted metal in its exact brand colour. A tech company may prefer black stainless steel for something sleek and understated.

The aim is for the sign to feel like a natural extension of your brand, not something added as an afterthought.

The most popular metal finishes

Each finish has its own personality:

  • Brushed stainless steel: clean, professional and timeless. It suits almost any interior and is our most requested finish.
  • Chrome silver: a mirror-polished look that catches the light and feels premium.
  • Gold and rose gold: warm and eye-catching, popular with hospitality, beauty and professional services.
  • Black stainless steel: modern and minimal, especially effective on light walls.
  • Bronze and copper: rich, traditional tones that suit period buildings and established firms.
  • Corten steel: a deliberately weathered, rust-toned finish with real texture, ideal for exterior walls and industrial-style offices.
  • Painted metal: matched to your exact brand colours for a strong, consistent look.

Built-up letters or flat cut?

Metal signs generally come in two styles. Built-up 3D letters have returns, or sides, which give them real depth and presence. They’re ideal for reception walls and building entrances where the sign needs to be seen from a distance.

Laser cut flat letters are thinner and usually mounted on stand-off locators so they sit just proud of the wall. They create a crisp, refined look and work well where space is tighter, such as meeting room doors, corridors and smaller receptions.

Getting the size and position right

A beautifully made sign can still look wrong if the scale is off. Too small and it gets lost on a large wall. Too big and it can overwhelm a compact reception. A good rule is to think about where people will first see the sign from. If visitors spot it from the lift doors or the far end of a corridor, the letters need to be large enough to read comfortably at that distance.

Height matters too. Reception signs usually work best when they sit just above the eye line of someone standing at the desk, so they’re visible over staff and furniture. During the design stage we produce visuals showing the sign on your actual wall, so you can judge the proportions before anything is made.

Inside or outside?

Metal is one of the best materials for exterior signage in the UK. Stainless steel resists corrosion, copes with rain and frost, and keeps its finish for many years with only occasional cleaning. Inside, you have even more freedom, as fine detail and more delicate finishes are easy to look after.

Looking after a metal sign is refreshingly simple. A soft cloth and mild soapy water are usually all it needs, wiped in the direction of the grain on brushed finishes. Avoid abrasive pads or strong chemicals, and your sign will keep its finish for years.

Consider adding lighting

If your office is busy into the evening, or your sign faces the street, illumination is worth thinking about. Metal letters can be halo lit from behind, creating a soft glow around each character while the face keeps its metallic finish. It’s a relatively simple upgrade that makes a big difference after dark.
